Artist’sStatement

JessieFisher, Professor in Painting and Drawing

   Thepainter is asked to revere, and then to re-order nature in their own image.Paintings are not meant to fool the eye, but to reassert artifice. Standing infront of a great painting, one is participating in a rarified visual discoursethat is independent of the day-to-day world. It is a dream made concrete, yetthrough the discursive qualities ofthe medium, the painter is able to elaborate at great length through theatemporal poetry of the picture plane.

    Mywork engages with histories of representational painting focusing on devices oftheatricality, allegory and the scrutiny of observation. My work isformal, relying on its visual organization to convey content. I compose inlinguistic pairings to create scenes of ecological equilibrium; gravity and levity,pressure and lacunae set the stage for the figuration which inhabits theproscenium.

    I am directly concernedwith two things: the recursive manipulation of spatial divisions within thepicture plane and the tactics involved in the construction of illusory formwhich break down boundaries between abstraction and representation; drawing andpainting. The linear and the decorative bind these two considerations together.Each painting is a continuation of allusion, associations and discoveries broughtfrom previous work that asks the painter to examine and engage their fluency.

    The subject is irrelevant.

    It is the technicalnarrative that is the painter’s philosophy.

     Thepainter’s ideology is revolutionary and essential.

      Isee no hyperbole in romanticizing a life dedicated to the poetics of painting,a life both ascetic and extroverted.

     画者要敬畏自然，再用自己的图像将自然重新排列。绘画不是为了愚弄人们的眼睛，而是重申（展示错觉的）技巧。当你伫立在一张伟大画作的面前，你便参与了一场被提炼过的视觉对话，这是在世俗世界和日常生活中不曾有的。这是一个具体的梦，然而通过媒介的论述性，画者可以在画面里精心制作宏大篇幅的永恒诗意。

      我的作品涉及到历史故事的具象绘画，尤其关注于戏剧性、寓言性和审视视角的表现。我的作品是正式的，依赖于组织视觉信息来传达内容。我用反义的词汇创造画面的生态平衡；庄严和轻浮，压力和空隙，为肖像人物提供了可栖息的舞台。

      我最关切的两个问题是：对画面平面空间进行分割的递归处理，及构建策略打破抽象和具象之间界限的虚幻形式。

速写和油画，线性和装饰性将这两个因素捆绑在一起。每一幅画都是对之前作品的暗示、联想和探索的延续，这些都要求画者检查并运用它们的流畅性。

      这个话题无关紧要。

      是一个画者在技术层面阐述出的理念。

      画者的思想是变革性的，是不可或缺的。

      我没有看到任何不夸大浪漫的生活可以致力于诗歌和绘画，生活既是苦行也是外向的。
